Haney’s Tavern
est. 1840
In 1838 Berry Haney, a migrant from Cross Plains, Tennessee, established the first Cross Plains, Wisconsin post office in a log house. Early Cross Plains was the site of important military road crossings and Haney became the pioneer village’s best-known settler. The tavern (an INN in the 1800's) built from native stone, was erected for Haney in 1840 by the Birds, builders also of Madison’s first state capitol. Haney's Tavern was a well-known Stagecoach Stop (located on Stagecoach Road today) for many weary travelers. The farmhouse is Dane County’s oldest existing building and includes a barn built in 1924. This unique historic property is beautifully situated at the Gateway to the Driftless Region and along the Cross Plains Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The serene Black Earth Creek, a Class 1 Trout Stream meanders through the acreage. ︾
about the flowers
As a homage to the historic property and Stewards of the Land “Haney’s Tavern Flowers” began. The Haney’s Tavern Logo includes the birth flowers of our family- myself, my husband John and our three teenagers: Alaina, Aiden and Ashlyn.
