Haney’s Tavern
Cross Plains “Stagecoach Inn”
Early Cross Plains was the site of important military road crossings. In 1838 Berry Haney, a migrant from Cross Plains, Tennessee, became the pioneer village’s best-known settler. The tavern (an INN in the 1800's) built from native stone, was erected for Haney in 1840 by the Birds, builders also of Madison’s first state capitol. Haney's Tavern was a well-known Stagecoach Stop (located on Stagecoach Road today) for weary travelers. The farmhouse is Dane County’s oldest existing building; the property includes a barn built in 1924.
This unique historic property is beautifully situated at the Gateway to the Driftless Region and along the Cross Plains Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The serene Black Earth Creek, a Class 1 Trout Stream meanders through the acreage. Summer peak brings abundant Flower Farm blooms.
